Reflecting On My RTL- Week 1

My first reaction after watching myself teach was wow... There were a lot of mistakes made and a lot of things that I can learn from. At first, it made me feel uncomfortable watching myself teach and talk on camera but I got over that and started to watch for my mistakes. My job was to teach the class about Tiki Masks and what the shapes of their eyes meant. Not knowing anything about Tiki Masks, I was not quite sure where to start the lesson and I struggled finding a fun/interesting way to teach the "students".

Before starting the lesson, I felt like I was prepared to teach the class. I quickly found out that whenever I was put under pressure, I quickly forgot a lot of the information that I wanted to talk about.

If I was going to do this lesson again, I would do a few things differently. Instead of using markers and paper to have the class draw masks, I would give the class play doh and let them shape the eyes to what they thought they would look like. I would also have big post it notes to hang in the front of the room to show the class what the masks looked like after they were done with their play doh so they could then fix their eyes and shape them correctly. Finally, I would have practiced the lesson more and gave background information on why the eyes were shaped like they were.

Overall, I felt that I got the point across to my "students" and they learned how to distinguish the different eyes shapes and meanings of Tiki Masks. I feel that even though I was a little bit shaky at times, I feel like I did a pretty good job for the first lab.

I look forward to the upcoming labs and fixing everything that I need to work at. I enjoyed reading the comments from my peers; they all gave good reviews and left good comments and suggestions on what they would have done differently. I enjoy getting comments from peers, it makes life a little bit easier!

Thanks,
Mike

  2. Mike,
Just a quick blog tip. Be sure you have a title for each post. See me if you need help. For example, this one could be; Reflecting on my RTL - Week 1 - AEE 412 Lab

  4. I like the idea you mention of play doh to create the Tiki eye. That would help address some learner diversity.

  5. It is always difficult to watch yourself teach. When I hear myself talk I really cringe!
I videotape myself about once a week and I am in my third year. This is such a wonderful reflective tool. At the end of the class you have some ideas in your head as to how you can improve upon the lesson, but you can't remember or catch everything so having that video is priceless.

Remember, when you are feeling overwhelmed it is completely acceptable to take a pause and a deep breath so you can regain your conscious thought.

Also, you aren't going to be able to practice every lesson before you teach it. Being a teacher is like being an actor, sometimes you need to improvise. Some of my fondest and greatest teaching moments came from off the cuff ideas. : )

    Keep up the great work!!!
